How to start
Q2 Based on what criteria should I choose countries to invest in?
A
There are unlimited criteria in choosing countries and regions to invest in. For example, an orthodox way is to place a high premium on economic growth (GDP growth rate). Other possible criteria include the pace of population increase, abundance of natural resources, and large supply of food due to flourishing agriculture. You can also have completely different perspectives. Choosing countries where the Olympics or the World Cup tournament will be held or where there have been changes in government or regime could be an interesting approach.
Which countries will you choose? On what criteria?

Let us share one successful example in choosing countries to invest in.

Nikko Asset Management started to notice China over five years ago. Although China is now regarded as a country with high growth and low risk, not many people were saying good things about China back then. As there were many causes of instability in China, such as policies, public safety, prices, interest rates, foreign exchange, and infrastructure, global investors focused only on advanced economies that had more stable conditions. However, Nikko Asset Management judged that all negative information about China had already been priced in the market, but positive information, such as its future growth, had not yet been factored in Chinese stock prices. In 2005, Nikko Asset Management created and launched a mutual fund that invests in Chinese Yuan-denominated China A-shares. Subsequently, China experienced exceptional growth and investors around the world started to pay attention. At its peak, the NAV of the China mutual fund we created increased in value by as much as five times. (Note: This example refers to past performance and is not a guarantee of future results.)

So choose the countries you think will grow in the future, relying on your own ideas and creativity.

Q3 I would like to create a portfolio without thinking too much about which countries to invest in.

Q4 Why are there 31 countries and regions in the investment universe?
A

We wanted to make the competition as real as possible. For instance, even though equity markets exist in countries such as Argentina and Pakistan, in reality it is difficult for individual investors invest there due to strict capital regulations, extremely low liquidity, and poor access to information. With this in mind, we selected the following 31 countries and regions, whose ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) are listed either on the Tokyo Stock Exchange or the New York Stock Exchange, to be included in the investment universe for the Country Pick competition. We believe this investment universe offers some interesting choices of countries that will offer sufficient profit opportunities. In addition, there may be cases where some countries or regions will be added to the investment universe.

Q5 How do you calculate the NAV of countries in the investment universe?
A
The NAV for Japan (the Japan Index Fund) as of date T (trade date) will be calculated based on the closing price of the TOPIX (Tokyo Stock Price Index) on date T, deducting trust fees from the TOPIX price. The NAV of all other countries on date T will be calculated by converting the MSCI Country Index (denominated in US dollars) on date T-1 (one day before date T) into Japanese yen based on the exchange rate as of date T and deducting trust fees from the converted amount.
Q6 Will the countries pay dividends?
A
There will be no dividends as the countries in the Country Pick investment universe are represented by non-dividend index funds. However, this does not mean that the effect of dividends is not included in the performance of the countries. The index to which each country is linked takes into account the effect of dividends from the stocks included in the index. Therefore, in the Country Pick competition, country performance will improve not only due to capital appreciation but also due to dividend income.
Q7 I would like to change the countries I invested in. What should I do?
A
You can review and change the countries in your portfolio simply by performing the following steps on the “Order Entry Screen.”
①Review the current weighting of the countries you invested in. The weighting will change every business day based on the price movements of the countries.

③Enter the weighting for each newly included country. You need to adjust the weighting of each country so that the percentage in the “Total” row is 100%.
